An inside look into the tulip industry in the Netherlands and those who stand to profit (or lose) from it.
The tulip boom of the Golden Age has returned to North Holland. Almost four hundred years after tulips were first imported from Asia Minor, the Netherlands has grown to become the center of the worldwide tulip industry, bringing in billions of dollars annually. Thanks to a Dutch version of gold fever, the tulip world is turning at breakneck speed. At flower shows, an excited atmosphere reigns supreme, as the demand for new breeds of tulips is much larger than the supply. For some bulbs, buyers pay ridiculously high prices and take enormous financial risks for the sake of profit.
In Tulip Gold (2004) we follow some families of tulip growers whose lives are completely overrun by their passion for the tulip. 'We think about tulips 24 hours per day.' Despite the economic upheaval that is turning the tulip world upside down, the growth and development of the tulip continues to follow the rhythm of the seasons.
Tulip Gold is een co-production between Viewpoint Productions, RTV-NH, the Dutch Cultural Media Fund and the ThuisKopiefonds.
