In Over the Hill (2007) filmmaker Sunny Bergman turns the spotlight on the prevailing ideal conception of beauty. The cosmetics industry apply cunning techniques in order to seduce women to conform to an ideal which in reality does not exist and thus can never be achieved.

In Over the Hill Sunny Bergman draws inspiration from her personal life. At 34, Sunny is worried her days as an attractive young woman are numbered, while at the same time, she is angry that women are constantly judged on their looks.

This internal ambivalence is the underlying motive for a cinematic journey of a world in which 35-year-old women are already over the hill. The cosmetics industry capitalizes on this fact and does not refrain from pointing out the shortcomings of Sunny and other women – shortcomings which run the gamut from crow’s feet to the labia, from sagging breasts to saddlebags. Sunny submits herself to the critical gaze of plastic surgeons who would love to put her under the knife and she gets the lowdown from glossy magazines like Cosmopolitan. Why do they pay so much attention to appearance, while they also preach that women should be independent and unconventional?

The film shows how women are no longer able to see themselves in a normal perspective because images of women are airbrushed and 'photoshopped.' Wrinkles, waists, breasts, everything can be touched up in pictures, which means that women end up striving to attain an ideal that doesn’t really exist. The photo becomes more real than reality.

Over the Hill is a co-production between Viewpoint Productions and VPRO Television.

Directed by Sunny Bergman. Written by Sunny Bergman and Tamara Vuurmans.
